Russell was the first capital of New Zealand and one of the first European settlements. The town is rich in history and is a quaint see side village with many attractions and activities for tourists. Russell is situated in the Bay of Islands and is mostly accessible by boat or car ferry, although there is road access. Russell is primarily now a tourist destination with boating, fishing, restaurants, wineries, local art and many attractions all encompassed in a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere. Passenger ferries operate continuously to the tourist town of Paihia. |
